While studying for his medical degree, Bart Biermans noticed that nearly all diseases are treated on an acute, medicine-first basis. Acute healthcare based on medicine has brought us many great things: our life expectancy has rocketed skyward over the centuries and many previously life-threatening infections can now be easily treated.
However, this classical Western approach to healthcare also lead to overmedicalization of patients. In order to treat chronic diseases such as asthma, rheumatism and Crohn’s disease, patients are forced to take pills for the rest of their lives.
It is time that we redress the balance, time to start properly researching alternative, often ancient, treatments, giving them a place inside our healthcare system. Many alternative treatments have been labeled inferior, dismissed with arrogance, based on preconceived ideas from positions of power. This is unjustified, because many of these treatments can have a beneficial effect on chronic illnesses.
“It is my mission to raise public awareness about the power you possess to optimize your own health. There are many alternatives to the modern healthcare system.”
